So you’ve finally made the decision to become a registered soccer
referee and now you want to know what’s involved.  It’s pretty
straight forward.

You need to go through our training program and pass a written test at the end to
confirm that you know the basics.  People of all ages do it all of the time, so it’s quite
doable if you apply yourself.

Entry-Level Grade 8

The classes typically are held on 4 evenings or sometimes over a weekend for a total of 16 hours.
There is a fee for taking the course, to cover the cost of the instructor and the class materials.

If you pass the test, then you’ll be eligible to register as a Grade 8 referee with the United States
Soccer Federation.   You’ll need to register with the USSF to be able to referee OSA youth games
and OSA adult games.

You normally have to be at least 13 to take the Entry-Level Grade 8 course, but you can request the
State Director of Instruction to consider waiving this requirement in special circumstances.

Recreational Grade 9

These classes typically are held on 2 evenings or sometimes over a weekend for a total of 8
hours.  There is a fee for taking the course, to cover the cost of the instructor and the class
materials.

If you pass the test, then you’ll be eligible to register as a Grade 9 referee with the United States
Soccer Federation.  The registration fee is separate from the course fee.  You’ll need to register
with the USSF to be able to referee OSA recreational youth games.
